Am I a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
In-office teeth whitening may be a good option for patients who wish to quickly whiten stained or yellow teeth. A number of individuals decide to brighten their smiles before big life events, such as graduations or weddings. To determine if in-office teeth whitening is right for you, one of our dentists will examine your mouth to ensure it is healthy enough for the procedure. It is important to understand that whitening solutions can only brighten natural tooth enamel and will not change the color of any dental restorations. In-office teeth whitening may enhance the look of teeth discolored by:
- The natural aging process
- Red wine, tea, cola, fruit juice, or coffee
- Berries or tomato-based foods
- Curry or other pigmented spices
- Some health conditions or medications
- Tobacco use
What Is the Treatment Process?
Before getting started, we will polish your teeth to allow for an even application of whitening gel. We will then cover your gums and other soft tissues with a protective barrier and place a special pair of glasses over your eyes. Once the prescription-strength whitening gel is applied to your teeth, we will position our LED whitening light in front of your mouth. This light activates the peroxide in the gel to help dissolve stains within the enamel. The gel will be left in place for about 15 – 20 minutes and then thoroughly removed. Depending on your desired results, we may repeat this process 2 – 3 more times. At the end of your treatment, our team will remove the whitening gel and protective barriers and thoroughly rinse your teeth.
Following Your Teeth Whitening Visit
While you can generally return to your normal routine after the treatment, it is best to avoid products that might stain your teeth for a least a few days, like coffee and tobacco products. Some patients experience temperature sensitivity following teeth whitening, but this typically subsides on its own. It is a good idea to brush after consuming foods or drinks that may stain your teeth and maintain good oral hygiene each day. When you visit ACE Dental of Harker Heights for routine dental cleanings, our team will try to polish off any new stains that accumulate between visits. We also offer home teeth whitening kits that can allow you to touch up and maintain your results over time.
Will Insurance Cover Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening is an elective aesthetic dentistry service and is generally not covered under dental insurance plans. When you visit ACE Dental of Harker Heights for your consultation, we will review your treatment costs and the affordable payment options accepted at our practice. Our team can even help you apply for special patient financing plans.
